Star of the Decade...

Hi Friends,
Two more days, and we all will be gearing up for welcoming a new year and also, a new decade. I hope you celebrated and enjoyed your moments in the concluding year and decade. Off late I am writing more on films, and this time also no different. This article is to pick my Star of the decade in Bollywood.

The decade started with a big promise called Hrithik Roshan who was hyped as the next ruler of Bollywood thanks to his debut film "Kaho Na Pyaar Hai". But the promise couldn't materialize fully as most of his films Yaadein, Na Tum Jano Na Hum, Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, Lakshya, and recent ones Kites and Guzaarish bombed at box office. Though he had his share of victories in Koi Mil Gaya, Krrish and Dhoom 2 but couldn't become a Badshah though he was magnificiant as Akbar in Jodhaa Akbar.

Coming to Big B himself, it was definitely a comeback decade. Bachchan saab started the decade with a bang called "Koun Banega Crorepati" and launched his comeback journey with a string of hit performances in Ek Rishta, Aankhen, Kaante, Baghban, Khakee, Black, Waqt, Sarkar, Cheeni Kam and most recent Paa. He also won two National Awards in this decade and now successfully completed KBC-4. He is growing younger and bigger, even his young son Abhishek is proving no match to the Emperor of Bollywood.

Now comes Badshah, Shahrukh Khan. He continued his winning streak of late 90s in the first half of decade. Devdas, Chalte Chalte, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Main Hoon Naa, Veer Zaara and Swades made sure he kept his No. 1 position intact till 2005. But things started changing in the second half. King Khan started appearing monotonous and his rival Khans proving too hot for him to handle. Though he gave an excellent performance in Chakde! India but that was the lone differentiator during the second part of decade.

This decade if someone has shown tremendous progress, then it is definitely Akshay Kumar. After his comeback with Hera Pheri in 2000, he gave hits every year - Ek Rishta, Ajnabi (both 2001), Aankhen, Awaara Paagal Deewana (2002), Andaaz (2003), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Khakee, Aitraaz (2004), Waqt, Garam Masala (2005), Phir Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhag (2006), Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyya, Welcome (2007), Singh is King (2008), Kambhakth Ishq (2009) and now Tees Maar Khan (2010). Though off late he is turning monotonous with comedy roles but he has shown to the world that without having a filmy background also you can become a No. 1 star.

Ajay Devgan also has his moments with critically acclaimed "The Legend of Bhagat Singh", Bhoot, Qayamat, Gangaajal, Khakee, Golmaal, Omkara, and Golmaal 2. This year only he has four hits "Athithi tum kab Jaoge", Rajneeti, "Once upon a time in Mumbai" and Golmaal 3. But the stardom still eludes him.

Saif Ali Khan was also in race with some superb performances in Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Ek Haseena Thi, Hum Tum, Being Cyrus, Race and Kurbaan. Other Khan, Salman was off colour till 2009 as Tere Naam and Partner were the only notable films till Wanted came. But then on No Stopping for Sallu, his Dabangg became the biggest grosser of 2010 and is inching closer to all time blockbuster 3 Idiots.

Now comes the Idiot but definitely the Star of the Decade. He started with double Dhamakaa with Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai, both became a craze in India. Lagaan went on win all accolades and was one of the finalists in Oscars 2002 before bowing out to "No Mans Land". Dil Chahta Hai became a must watch movie for youths. No prizes for guessing, he answers to the name "Aamir Khan". Though he took a four year break he came with a bang in 2005 with Mangal Pandey. Though the film didnt do well, but his style and performances were excellent. Then came Record Breaking streak. Rang De Basanti became a national raze raising the patriotism among youths followed by super hit Fanaa in the same year. Aamir's directorial debut "Taare Zameen Par" was as spectacular as his first production film Lagaan. Then came the power packed Ghajini which broke all the Bollywood records. But it was not long lasting, his next film 3 Idiots followed and it grossed nearly 400 crores becoming the Biggest grosser till date in Bollywood though Dabangg has come closer to it. He scored a Hat-trick with Peepli [Live] becoming his third produced film and getting nominated as an official entry into Oscars 2011. I Hope this time Aamir will prove lucky. Even his TV adds drew greater attention whenever they were aired. He was successful in every aspect he worked upon be it an Actor, Producer, Director or Brand Ambassador for India tourism. Now he will be beginning the next decade with his fourth home production Dhobi Ghat which is directed by his wife Kiran Rao. Definitely he is the star of the concluding decade.

There are few promising youngsters in Ranbir Kapoor, Imran Khan, and Abhay Deol but I wont foresee any major changes next decade at least for first five years. The established ones listed above are expected to keep rocking. But I hope we get to see more and more quality movies.

Have a nice yearend, and wish you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011.

Warm Regards,
Chetan

Worth Wait of 11 years...

Hi Friends,

Today is a unique day for me. Though I am a big movie buff but I never watched a movie on its first day release. That too a mass loving Upendra directed movie. Thanks to my friend Nitin for booking advance tickets.

Directly jumping to review, if I write it in a simple way it is just a pakka Upendra movie, starts with a bang, gets more complex till interval, and even more complex after interval and ends up with a simple relevant message. And two and hours no moment of relaxation, you need to keep your eyes and ears alert. In between my friend yelled "I need break" such is the intensity. Super is no different but with a different theme. This time Upendra goes a bit further from the concept of Complex Human Nature which he narrated in his last directed movie "Upendra". He digs deep into showing the psyche of Indian common man and the problems which India is facing currently through a ultra modern Indian girl. He offers solution also and imagines how India would be in 2030. During this journey, he delivers long punching dialogues, fights with goons, changes his hairstyles, and dances in typical UPPI style. Nayantara looks pretty and good, Sadhu Kokila makes his presence felt, supporting cast provides proper assistance but it is Upendra who rocks. Only thing which was missed is Gurukiran, I think he would have added new dimension to the music like the previous Upendra movies.

It is a must watch for Kannada movie buffs. This year I watched three good movies in Kannada - Aptarakshaka, Just Maat Mathalli and this one. As an ending note I would like to say it was a worth wait of 11 years to see a new Upendra directed movie.

"Uppinakai" tumba ruchiyagide, I like it, I like it...
