"Mungaru Male" A refreshing movie

Dear Readers,

Last time my article was a review on bollywood film "Taare Zameen Par". This time also i ve chosen a film review as the blog topic. To let you know, I am a big movie buff but my language of movies limits to Hindi and Kannada. I seldom watch English movies. Coming to my interested languages, i never miss a good movie. I suggest my friends also to watch good movies. Sometimes i ridicule them for not watching a good movie. This time i was only at the receiving end of my own critics after watching Kannada movie "Mungaru Male" after 15 months of its release date. I somehow missed to watch such a well made movie before yesterday. The rest of my blog topic will be dedicated for the movie and its unique features. By now i think thousands of articles might have been written in praise of the film, but better late than never i would also like to say a few words on the great movie.

"Mungaru Male" means Monsoon Rain. The film was released in the last week of the year 2006 and took the Kannada film industry by storm. It was a huge hit and raised the standards of the film making in Kannada. The film has the usual story of boy meeting girl and falls for her at first sight. Our protagonist Pritam (played by Ganesh) sees a beautiful girl in front of a shopping mall and loses his heart at first sight and falls in a manhole. The same girl comes and helps him to come out of that. While lifting him from the manhole a newly purchased watch falls from her bag which she doesnt notice to pick up before leaving the scene. Pritam takes that watch and starts searching for her and even takes the help of FM radio but his search goes in vain. In between we come to know that Pritam is the only son of a big industrialist who screams at his son for every irresponsible act his son commits. But Pritam has a friendly mother to whom he confesses everything including the manhole episode and his liking towards that girl. He and his mother travel to Madikeri to meet their family friends - a retired Colonel and his wife. There he comes to know that the girl he had met is their daughter and she is getting married in seven days. Our hero is heart broken and how he handles the situation and what twists and turns the story takes constitute the rest of the film which ends in a tragic note.

What makes the film different is its photography. Giving justice to the title the film is mostly shot in rain. The beautiful locales of Madikeri and Jog falls look even more in the drizzle. The green farm land, narrow roads which divide the forest give refresing touch to the film. Adding another feather to cap is the music both the background score as well as the melodious songs. One song "anisuthide yako indu..." sung by Sonu Nigam had become the anthem in Karnataka last year.

Coming to acting department, all the characters are given justice through the choice of good actors. Veteran actor Anantnag as the retired colonel and heroine's father has done extremely well. He lives to his reputation as the most natural actor among the stars of Kannada film industry. Pooja Gandhi has done well as Nandini, the girl who steals our hero's heart. She is beautiful and fits really well be it a traditional costume or a glamarous one. She acts well also. But the movie belongs to Ganesh as far as acting is concerned. A small built, simple boy next door kind of personality but possesses high quality of acting skills. He also like Anantnag is very natural in his acting and dialogue delivery. In every scene he has excelled, be it talking to radio jockey or in fight with goons, or in provoking heroine with witty words, or impressing her father, or murmuring with his rabbit friend "Devdas" and cutting jokes on him. But the best scenes of the movie are, one when the Hero expresses his deep love to his sweet heart conveying her that no one can love her as deep as he loves and will continue loving after his death also. The other scene is when his rabbit friend "Devdas" dies. In Kannada film industry i admire Late Dr. Raj and Dr Vishnuvardhan for their versatility, I also consider Anantnag and Ramesh as two of the finest actors and among new comers Sudeep holds lot of promise. Now after seeing Ganesh, i can undoubtedly put him in the ranks of above mentioned people. He is definitely going to stay for long.

Before winding up, i would like to highlight the end message of the movie i.e. "Preethi madhura, Tyaaga amara" which means Love is sweeter but sacrifice is remembered forever. It is very touching message. In my words, to love one needs heart but sacrifice demands bigger one.

Happy movie watching,

Yours sincerely,
Chetan
