What a Movie?

Hi Reader Friends,

Again i am back after a short break of 3 months. This is year end and every year end, i write the summary of the passing year either in the form "Letters to my friends" or through Blog (since last year). This time also initially i wanted not to deviate. But probably because of the year didnt go eventful and successful this time or my failure in identifying the main points, i decided not to write the summary. So what is the alternative? Hmmm, this time an interesting one.

Last thursday, i took time off on weekday evening to watch the newly released bollywood movie "Taare Zameen Par". Prior to its release the film was associated with a hype of "First directorial venture" of bollywood actor Aamir Khan. Also the punchline "Every Child is Special" made it even more curious for the cine goers. Coming to me, i am a big fan of Aamir since childhood. I have made it a point to watch his movie in theatre only, for the first time since they are worth for the ticket money. This time i found two of my friends Sandeep and Ravikiran for company and we went on in search of the theatre called "Balaji Deluxe" in Mysore where the movie was playing. The theatre was OK kind of but we had no issues.

The film started and the first half portrays a child Ishaan Awasthi (played by Drasheel Safary) who is 9 year old. He is neither good in studies nor in sports. But he has nurtured painting as his hobby. But in today's cut throat competition, studies are given much importance and excelling in class is necessary for survival. Our protagonist Ishaan belongs to different school of thought, he fails in every class exam and he doesnt bother to be attentive to what the teacher explains. During class hours he always stays punished and home work, he seldom does with interest. His spellings are not consistent and his hand writing needs a specialist decoder. Making his matters worse, he has a highly brilliant elder brother who excels in both studies and sports. The teachers are fed of this poor chap and always send a big list of complaints to his parents. The strict father of Ishaan cant find any better option than sending his kid to boarding school. Despite the reluctance and uproar from Ishaan, he is being sent to a boarding school in Panchagani that too during mid acedemic year. Discipline is the main "Mantra" of boarding school and unsurprisingly Ishaan's misery continues. Again the same saga repeats and the kid goes in a state of depression. Now enters the savior Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan) in the form of a temparary art teacher. He teaches in a school of mentally retarted children and gives the children the freedom to imagine during his painting classes. His eyes fall on the depressed Ishaan and unresponsiveness of the child makes him learn the problem of child. How Nikumbh convices Ishaan's parents and teachers and how he boosts the self confidence in the boy to bail him out of his misery forms the rest of the story (I dont want to reveal the problem of child and the climax to keep the interest alive in readers to see the movie :)).

Talking about performances, Darsheel Safary excels and tops the chart. The boy has shown tremendous acting potential. The film story doesnt allow him to talk much but his eyes, his facial expressions and his silence conveys the message effectively. Congratulations Darsheel, you have a very bright future. Aamir Khan is in usual best proving once again that he is one of the few best actors in the industry. All other actors also have done an excellent job by getting into the skins of their respective characters.

But more accolades are deserved by the persons behind the screen. Amole Gupte has come up with an very sensitive and important story as the children and their parents are concerned. I am sure he might have put tremendous effort in studying the behaviour of children and the problems they face in the ever demanding world. The combo of Shankar Ehsaan Loy have tuned very good music as demanded by the story and situations. All the songs except "Bum Bum bole..." are in background and they are successful in conveying the mood of the situation. The title track is soul stirring. Final but most important, Simply "Hats Off" to Aamir Khan the director who has handled the sensitive subject with great care giving utmost attention to minutest of details. He has not hesitated to put himself in supporting role giving Darsheel the highest screen space which the story demands. He has succeeded in conveying the correct message to the parents who demand much from school going kids, but not at the cost of entertainment. The film is as enjoyable any other clean entertainment film. Aamir has proved that he is not only perfect in acting but can show perfection behind the camera also. On the lighter note, he proves his critics right to some extent who alleges him for ghost directing the movies in which acts.

Overall a wonderful film to watch, especially must for kids and their parents. For bollywood what a way to end the year which gave very few blockbusters. For viewers like me, a great film on year end holidays.

As a concluding note, i wish you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR 2008. I wish the new year brings you good health, peace and harmony in your lives. I also hope, In the new year you fulfill all the goals that come in your way.

See U in new year...

Yours sincerely,
