Mahatma, the winner of India's freedom

Hi Friends,

October 2, 2006 will mark the 137th Birthday celebration of Mahatma Gandhi, father of our nation. The day in India is celebrated as "Gandhi Jayanti".

As all of us (Indians and other Indian History students) cant forget the fact that Gandhiji led the freedom movement and gained the status of Independence for India which was a British colony before 1947. Commonly speaking, "Gandhiji fought with Britishers and gained freedom for India". The statement in quotes is true but controversial also. The statement will surely make many eyebrows raise and also erupts a debate. Some will argue that the freedom is the result of combined effort of erstwhile Congress leaders and some will press the role of hardliners (Krantikaris) . I am also in agreement about the fact that Indian freedom is a fruit of struggle and sacrifice of all freedom fighters. We had Nehrus, Gokhales and Maulanas leading the people peacefully on one side of the spectrum while the other side was led by the likes of Netajis, Tilaks and Azads who had their mantra of "Eint ka jawab patthar". I salute all of them for their great contribution towards our country's freedom. But i still believe the gaint share of bouquets should go to Mahatma. The distinguishing factor of Mahatma was the unification of the countrymen. No one could unify the country as Gandhiji did. He introduced his weapons Peace, Non-violence and well articulated speeches very effectively in his "Satyagrahas" (Movements) and people simply followed. There was a "Non Cooperation Movement" and "Dandi March" to name a few. He was able to win the support from all regions and religions which others couldn't do. The main reason behind the overwhelming support remains that his battle was without bloodshed. His battle was unusual for British administration and forced them to leave India. The Indian freedom struggle especially the Gandhian technique inspired many world leaders who were fighting for the similar cause. Even world's greatest scientist Albert Einstein was hugely impressed and he even aspired to meet the Mahatma.

To support my theme i would like to draw analogy from a well fought Cricket match in terms of just the roles played. Cricket is a team game where 11 players contribute either with bat, ball or fielding skills. But in the end one will be awarded "Man of the Match" who has contributed hugely and being a deciding person of the fate of the match. If we see our freedom struggle also, all freedom fighters contributes but Mahatma Gandhiji was above all of them in winning the freedom for India also the great sobriquet "Father of the Nation".

Jai Hind.

Thanks and Regards,
Chetan
